A DC recommendation

We just got back from seeing A Midsummer Night's Dream at the Carter Barron Amphitheatre. It was amazing! The set and the costumes were beautiful and the interpretation of the play by the Shakespeare Theatre of DC was hilarious and very fresh (that's sort of a lame word, but I don't have a better one). I wish I could have snuck my camera in to take pictures of the set and the costumes. I got the one below from the Shakespeare Theatre's website. It's from their mainstage production, but they used the same staging.

If you're in the DC metropolitan area, hurry and go. You can get tickets on the day of the show only, but you can reserve them online at the first link above starting at 8:30 am. Pack a picnic too and you've got a cheap, extremely pleasant evening.

If you aren't in the area, check out the first link anyway to see the amazing costume of the fairy king, Oberon, and his servant, the highly entertaining Puck from the mainstage production. Everything we've ever seen from the Shakespeare Theatre (this and Hamlet) has been really amazing - I highly recommend it to everyone, whether you can make it to the free for all or buy tickets for the mainstage.

Useful notes:
  • Going north on 16th Street, turn left on Colorado and park there instead of in the parking lot. It's not that far to the amphitheatre and much, much easier to exit
  • Pack yourself a picnic dinner and you can eat it before the show on the grass, inside while waiting for the doors to open or once at your seat - no glass allowed in the amphitheatre though
  • Wait in line to get in at gate 4, not gate 3 since most people stop at gate 3
  • No cameras allowed (which is why I don't have any pictures of my own), but they only check bags, not pockets - not that I am encouraging anyone to take their camera in with them. If you do happen to forget that you camera is in your pocket, remember at least to turn off the flash!
  • Bring a jacket!
